Born in Washington, D.C., Andrew Walaszek spent his formative years traversing the cultural and geopolitical landscapes of mid-century Europe. Between 1957 and 1977, he lived across Communist Poland, industrial Glasgow, Non-Aligned Belgrade (Yugoslavia), and Soviet Minsk, absorbing the distinct architectures, social tensions, and visual atmospheres of both sides of the Iron Curtain. Returning to the United States in 1977, Walaszek settled in Chicago, where he forged a distinguished career at the frontier of computer science and applied mathematics. Working with institutions including NORC, SPSS, and IBM, he was the principal architect and developer behind the flagship desktop systems of SPSS—first for OS/2 and subsequently for Windows—which became the world’s foremost statistical computing platform. Throughout these demanding decades of software engineering, Walaszek painted relentlessly by night, converting renovated rooms in Chicago homes he restored into private studios. Following his retirement in 2014, Walaszek established his full-time studio practice on the quiet shores of Lake Avalon, Arkansas. His work is a masterly convergence of five decades of lived history, mathematical structure, visceral physical paint, and digital innovation.
